Nowadays, there are so many platforms available for businesses to gain exposure, create meaningful relationships with customers, and promote their products and services; but there are also several resources for businesses to learn how to properly use these platforms, such as podcasts. A podcast is defined as a digital audio or video file or recording, usually part of a themed series, that can be downloaded from a website to a media player or computer (Dictionary.com).
Today we will take a look at an episode of the Social Media Marketing Podcast with Michael Stelzner, the founder of Social Media Examiner. In this episode, TikTok Trends: How to Leverage Trending Content for Business, Stelzner interviews Wave Wyld, who is known on TikTok as the “Queen of Trend Alerts.” During the podcast, the two discuss why businesses should consider TikTok as a form of digital marketing and how businesses can use TikTok trends to gain more exposure.
Why should businesses consider using TikTok?
According to Wave Wyld, the number one reason businesses should create content on TikTok is because of its organic reach. Creators have gone viral on the app, with millions of likes and views, from posting a single video. The thing about using TikTok for a business, is that you don’t need to go viral, have thousands of followers, or get millions of likes to be able to reach your target market and be successful. You just need to attract the right followers.
Another reason businesses should consider using TikTok as a form of digital marketing, is because the algorithm is designed to give you exposure. The shelf life of a TikTok video is 90 days, as opposed to a few hours on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. This means that your videos can appear on users “For You Page” (the main feed on TikTok) for up to 90 days after they’re posted and still get engagement.
Lastly, TikTok has approximately 80 million users in the U.S. and has one of the widest varieties of demographics. People of all ages use the app, and there is also a wide variety of communities on TikTok such as, health and fitness gurus, makeup artists, cosplayers, moms, educators, and so much more. This gives any type of business the ability to reach their target audience, gain exposure, and engagement.
How can businesses use TikTok trends to gain exposure?
Throughout the podcast Wave Wyld refers to TikTok as an app that is built on trends. A trend is a common theme or sound that appears in a TikTok video, that people will repeat and put their own spin on. As a business, using trends allows you to show your personality and get more exposure. Using trends also allows businesses to put an emphasis on connecting with their audience more than showcasing their products or services. So now that we know what a trend is, you may be wondering how to identify them and use them to your advantage.
Wave Wyld provides us with three ways to discover TikTok trends and how to properly use them to gain more exposure.
1. Look for TikTok trends around current events: tie your brand, mission, or values to a current event and create content around it
2. Check the discover page for TikTok trends: use trending hashtags, sounds, and effects in order to show your audience your personality and that you understand the culture of the app
3. Spot new trends before they blow up: finding trends before they blow up has the biggest potential for growth
