At the Management Marketing Association (MMA) 2023 Fall Educators' Conference in Orlando, Florida (https://www.mmaglobal.org/mma-fall-educators-conference-in-person), Dr. Mary C. Martin, Professor of Marketing at FHSU, was awarded the MMA Teaching Innovation Award. Dr. Martin was one of 3 finalists who presented her teaching innovation on Wednesday, September 27, 2023. At the conference award luncheon on Thursday, September 28, Dr. Martin was announced as the winner.
The MMA Teaching Innovation Competition fosters advancement in the teaching of marketing by recognizing educators who have designed and implemented effective pedagogical innovations in marketing. Dr. Martin's award recognizes her hard work and dedication in creating and implementing The Social Media Marketing University (The SMMU) in her social media marketing classes at Fort Hays State. The competition was sponsored by Interpretive Simulations.
The SMMU assists students in learning about and getting hands-on experience in content marketing, social media marketing, and analytics. The SMMU is “a blog built by students, for students” targeting college students and professionals wanting to learn more about social media marketing and to start or advance their careers in social media marketing. Students compose and publish blog posts, promote their posts through social media platforms, and measure and analyze their results.
The SMMU was created by Dr. Martin in 2021 and was borne out of a need to give students hands-on experiences in social media marketing and address differences in challenges faced by students versus professionals in learning about social media marketing. The SMMU is implemented in her two social media marketing classes at FHSU (MKT 610 Social Media Marketing and MKT 611 Social Media Marketing Content and Analytics).
