When I first started college, I had no idea what I wanted to do! I ended up changing my major three times before I finally discovered through a marketing exploration class that I wanted to go into social media advertising. There are so many more careers in the social media field.

What do I do?

College is the easiest route of course, gets you the experience and knowledge you need to be successful. Of course, even college isn't enough to get you the job.

To create a plan for what you want to do in the future, it's easy to network yourself to employers around you. Using LinkedIn is a great pathway as well to help employers see your hard work! You must first allow yourself to fail, volunteer, partner with others, and do informational interviews. Following this format will help get your name out to employers, as well as impress them.

Once you've got that down, it's easy to see a little more inward perspective to what you are doing. Seeing inside work spaces media can broaden your mind on what occurs on a day to day business.

I don't want to go to college...

There are more routes than traditional college as well, lots of companies offer programs through employment to get degrees or certifications. Plenty of opportunities will be lining up for you, and talk about hands on experience!

"Facebook also offers a Social Media Marketing Professional Certificate program as well, which covers all aspects of effective social media management, including advanced insights into paid social programs (with a Facebook-specific slant)." This is an example of different roads you could easily take to get the career you want. Companies like Amazon are amazing for job opportunities as well and have good benefits for their employees.

Signing up for job agencies (temp. agencies) and keeping your eyes open for new opportunities is key to getting this type of certification. Lots of companies will email offers and opportunities through E-mail, so watch that as well!

Women in social media

Women have a huge advantage here as well, "At five years of experience women are 50% more likely than men to be making over $75,000 and none of our female respondents are making less than $35,000 by 5-years of experience. Also, men are more likely to be making under $35,000 than they are to be making over $140,000 by 5-years of experience in a job that is".

Women have constantly been marginalized in the business field, and with social media advertisement, women are just beginning to show how much they can bring to the table.

Regardless of gender/identity, if you feel passionately about social media, ads, surveys (etc.) you should join the field. There is so much work and development to be done in technology, but also research and data. The possibilities to this job are endless, and you should be able to have options, right?
