Are you diving into the deep waters of online marketing and at a loss for what position you best fit in? It can be daunting when you first start into online marketing since there seem to be so many different roles that have similar or even vastly different job duties. The SMMU is here to help! We want to help any young professional looking to start their career to make sure they are certain about what role they want to start out in. In this post, we will go over 3 different roles in online marketing and their different duties.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)/Search Engine Marketing (SEM) Specialist

HubSpot gives a great description of this type of marketing position that you can find here. An SEO specialist focuses on SEO content and making sure the company they work for is ranking well on the different search engines. They are paying for ad space on said search engines as well.

There are many duties for an SEO specialist that are sure to keep you busy. From conducting keyword research to analyzing and applying metrics on website and keyword performance. These duties are more on the analytical side of marketing and would benefit someone that likes the backend workings of online media.

Social Media Manager

Sprout Social gives a great explanation of the difference between two roles in marketing that seem fairly similar from the outside, but are vastly different when analyzed further. You can find that post here.

This role is exactly what it sounds like. As a social media manager, you are managing the social media accounts of the people that employ you. You are in charge of what and when these different accounts post. You essentially are the voice of the brand. You stick to the brand image and their overall theme.

There are three main themes to a social media manager's tasks and they are:

  • All things content

  • Listening and engaging with the brand

  • Strategy and analytics

Product Managers

Product Managers are an organizational and strategy role found usually within a technology company. They are viewed as an almost "CEO" role to that product and know absolutely everything there is about that product.

Their responsibilities can range from forecasting or actual marketing of the product to profit and loss responsibility. This seems to be a more all-inclusive role with different components of marketing all in one position. If you are a go-getter, this would be the job title for you.

Semrush has an article that goes more into depth on this position and you can find it here.
