Podcast: Rachel Pedersen & Why Storytelling Matters

Rachel Pedersen, a famous freelance marketing expert, has been helping social media managers, digital marketers, and entrepreneurs grow their businesses with social media marketing. She has appeared on USA Today and in Entrepreneur magazine, making a mark in the field of entrepreneurship. Using her podcast, called 'Social Media Secrets with Rachel Pedersen', she shares what she has learned on her journey and secrets and tips on how to conquer the social media marketing world. In a recent podcast, Rachel discusses the importance of storytelling by sharing how she became a social media manager.

Her Story: How She Became a Social Media Manager

At the beginning of her podcast, Rachel tells her listeners how she started out going to school to become a hairstylist and explains the obstacles and steps she used to take so no one would see her struggles. She would always try to stretch her dollar to make ends meet and create the impression that she didn't have any struggles. However by her doing this, rumors began to flourish that she was rich, and many assumed that she didn't have to work hard at all. This experience was the first of many that taught her the importance of telling your story, and how that can make a difference on impressions.

After working as a hairstylist for a while, a client of Rachel's approached her about a franchise that came into their possession. As Rachel does her hair, they talk about popular entrepreneurship sources, like 'Shark Tank', and Rachel brings up how important social media is for her marketing and how it impacts every major entrepreneurship and how well they will succeed. Her client got excited and had asked to see the social media platforms that she uses to share and promote her hairstylist abilities. The client then asked if she would be her social media manager and marketing consultant and a moment of thought later and she accepted the opportunity.

She was nervous but excited, and she decided to invest in herself and researched all that she could on social media marketing to improve her current abilities. She discovered that it's a never-ending field of learning as time goes on and that it's impossible to know everything, but each small step has to lead her to where she is today. Rachel stresses that while this was the opportunity of a lifetime, she didn't know everything right away and it took time and effort for her to become 'Queen of Social Media'.

What can we learn from Rachel's story? Why is Storytelling Important?

As Rachel says in her podcast, "If you don't share your story, people will make assumptions of who you are". This can be said for every entrepreneur out there; no matter how big your business your story and how you tell it can make a difference in how far you go. No one will want to invest or pay attention to a product or company if they don't have emotional appeal for consumers. It's more than just grabbing attention, it's establishing a brand through your words and presenting the image that you want to leave. Rachel learned early on in her career that not everyone is going to hear your story right away and that sharing it more and establishing it can only help your business. This is true in many aspects of life when it comes to presenting that resume to a potential employer or your fans on your social platform.
