TikTok is a great tool for businesses to use. It can help promote your business, engage with current and potential customers, and network with other professionals in your business community. Knowing how to use it and things to avoid are key to running a successful TikTok business page. Here are some dos and don'ts to help you maintain your account.

DON'T: Overusing Hashtags

Hashtags are a great way to use TikTok's algorithm to your advantage and reach people interested in content you are posting. There are many times, however, posts are filled with so many hashtags that the content of the post gets lost or muddied.

DO: Use 3-5 Hashtags Relevant to the Post and Your Business

3-5 hashtags that are a combination of trending hashtags and those specific to your business is a great way to increase reach. Create a unique hashtag for your business and/or campaign and use that in every post.

DON'T: Post Just to Post

Posting frequently and having your business visible may seem like a good thing, and typically a lot of exposure is a good thing. However, if you are posting just for the sake of posting without any direction or organization, it can get lost in the algorithm. Your engagement rate may also suffer as followers disconnect from your page.

DO: Have a Clear Plan and Content Ideas Ahead of Time

Creating a social media calendar and knowing exactly what areas you want to focus your marketing on ahead of time will help you plan your content across all platforms. The posts don't always have to be identical, but keeping a consistent theme will help your followers find your posts.

DON'T: Overcomplicate It

It is easy to become discouraged if you aren't receiving the engagement or following you anticipated, but keep doing what you are doing. You don't have to do what everyone else is doing, you just have to be consistent and your audience will find you.

DO: Research and Learn

Read blogs, listen to podcasts, watch videos, and constantly be learning about social media. The platforms, especially TikTok, change constantly so it is important to learn as much as you can as often as you can. If something isn't working for you, research and see if others have had success doing what you are doing, and what they did differently to help them.

TikTok can be an incredibly useful tool for any business. Knowing the things you should and should not do when creating content on that platform is the first step to creating engaging content. Avoiding common mistakes will help you maximize your reach and engagement.
