I've created my Facebook Business Page, but how do I get started?

We’ve all jumped into something we thought should practically take care of itself, only to find ourselves spending more time and energy getting it to “do the thing” than we planned on. House-training a puppy, teaching our parents how to use streaming services, starting a Facebook Business page… they all seem simple enough, right? They can be, with the right preparation, but if you jump in with no clear direction, they’ll all be running YOU before you can say “no, bad dog”!

So, where do you start? I can’t speak for house-training a puppy, or teaching my parents how to use streaming services (those are still works-in-progress) but I can help you out with these 5 steps to getting started and taking control of your Facebook business page.

5 Things to Know: Steps for Success

1. Know your roles

As Rami El-Abidin stated in their HubSpot article How to Design an Engaging Facebook Business Page "It takes a village to manage a Facebook Business Page”. Facebook has six specified roles for your village that include Admin, Editor, Moderator, Advertiser, Analyst, and Community Manager. As a page Admin, you can set different roles for your team members to give each member a clear idea of what is expected of them.

2. Know your schedule

Once everyone on your team has a role and knows what is expected of them, you can begin planning your content and frequency. This is an especially important step if you are a team of one! Whatever kind of schedule you decide on, you’ll want to be consistent. HubSpot recommends 4-6 times a week for B2B brands and daily for B2C brands (El-Abidin, 2023).

In addition to the frequency of posts, you’ll want to set a schedule for checking current content performance and analytics.

3. Know your platform

As easy as it would make your life as a marketer, you can’t set the same content to hit at the same time with the same frequency across all your social media platforms. Based on global data Facebook’s most engaging times are during the late morning to early afternoon in the first half of the week (West, 2024). You can use this as a baseline to guide your schedule, or you can take advantage of scheduling tools like Sprout Social to discover optimal times for your specific business.

4. Know your content

Facebook offers a wide variety of post formats including photos, videos, polls, stories, live videos, events, links, and questions. Probably the most feared of these would be live videos, but this format can be leveraged for some great audience engagement. It’s a great chance for viewers to ask questions, see your facility or even meet team members (El-Abidin, 2024).

5. Know your budget

While advertising on Facebook can be relatively cheap, it’s best to set a budget ahead of time to keep track of spending. You can run ads on Facebook, but you can also boost posts.

Boosting a post can be done by adding a budget to a post that is already performing well or by creating a new post specifically to boost it (Newberry, 2024). You may be wondering why you’d want to boost a post if it is already performing well on its own. Boosting the post will get it in front of people who would not otherwise see it, and since you know it’s done well with your current audience as a test, you can be more confident that it will perform well with a bigger audience.

If you’re not sure where to put your budget, boosted posts are a great option. They’re especially great if you have limited time, a small team or are just getting started with social advertising (Newberry, 2024).
