As technology use continues to grow every day, researchers have seen a direct correlation with the number of marketing jobs in social media marketing increasing. Since you are here reading this blog, you are probably wondering what current hiring managers are looking for in candidates. Look no further, as I have compiled a list of qualities that these employers are on the lookout for.
Experience in the Industry
According to SEMrush, one way to gain credibility in marketing is to pursue a degree in marketing or complete online certification courses. Though both of these will build up your marketing knowledge base, employers also look for candidates that have had on-the-job experiences. Get a jumpstart in your marketing career by applying for internships! A number of these are either on-site or remote. I recommend that you check out LinkedIn while on your internship search.
Stay Current with Trends
Showcase your desire for continued learning and adaptability to marketing by conducting your own research. If you are one who likes to read, I would suggest that you start reading blog posts on the The SMMU blog. Personally, I love learning from YouTube videos! Some of my favorite channels for this topic are Alex Cattoni and Pat Flynn. Podcasts are another great avenue for learning as well. Read more on SEMrush
You Have the Ability to Write
Especially for inbound marketing efforts, your manager will expect you to have skills in copywriting. Some of your potential tasks could include writing or editing eBooks, social media posts, emails, or website pages. The best way to get better at writing is to literally practice it. Read more tips and tricks on how to develop your writing skills on HubSpot.
Design is Not a Stranger
If you plan on working for a large corporation, most times you will work alongside with graphic designers. Contrastingly, if you are going to work for a smaller company, you may be expected to produce visual content yourself. Either way, you will have to review designs mockups with the marketing team. HubSpot mentions that it can be an extreme competitive advantage to have experience with the Adobe software (primarily in Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom).

Your Online Resume
If you have not created a LinkedIn profile, this is your call to do so. LinkedIn is a platform for professionals to connect with employers. You also have the opportunity to highlight your career experiences.
If you are new to creating your profile or currently have one, here are some tips from the Content Marketing Institute to take your profile to the next level:
Add a headshot that is professional and up-to-date.
Use keywords in your headline. Not only is it the first thing employers will read, but it also can help with SEO on LinkedIn. The keywords should be unique and describe you as a professional. For upcoming marketers, some examples could be Social Media Manager, High-Achieving Marketing Student at Your University, Aspiring Marketing Manager, or Content Strategist.
Your summary should tell your story. This is the portion of your profile where you can write your elevator pitch.
Add your work samples. For marketers, this could include blogs you have written, graphics you have designed, marketing projects you have done, etc.
Showcase your skills. Though LinkedIn will recommend including skills such as leadership, be sure to include marketing-related skills. Some of these skills include blogging, Facebook, social media, lead generation, etc.
