Blogging: Activity versus Productivity

Knowing the difference between the two can save you both time and money!

Most of us have spent hours in front of our keyboard, just to read the words we wrote to find ourselves embarrassed with the content produced. Other times we have spent minutes creating content and greatness was produced. What are the reasons behind such a disparity in results? Why is it that sometimes with greater effort, poorer results are produced? And most importantly, what can we do to become more productive and less active without wasting time?

Imagine if someone invented a pill that would block non-productive thoughts to enter your mind when working. A pill that would keep you focused even when your life is filled with turmoil and distractions. Assuming that the side effects were negligible, I’d be first in line to take it, and my guess is that the demand would be enormous.

As far as I know, no suck pill exists. In the meantime, there are quite a few things we can do to save time and money by being more productive with our time and less active, where we are likely wasting time while trying to be productive. According to a recent Hubspot blog, proficiency in Google Sheets is a must in order to save time. “As a marketer, you already know you love Google Sheets for storing data, tracking performance metrics, and creating collaborative reports. But are using the full arsenal of Google Sheets shortcuts available to streamline your workflow and save valuable time?

Whether you’re experienced with Google Sheets or you’re just getting started, you’ll be happy to know there are many simple and time-saving Google Sheets keyboard shortcuts at your disposal. Keeping track of the numerous keyboard shortcuts may sound daunting but, luckily, I’m here with a list of Google Sheets shortcuts you can bookmark and return to again and again.” (Santiago, n.d.)

I couldn’t agree more with the proficiency in shortcuts in Google Sheets, or any primary software that you find yourself using. Not only is it a time saver but knowing shortcuts may open avenues or productivity you may not have knows existed otherwise. An obvious example of this is understanding and implementing Google Sheet formulas versus performing the math manually with each number added to the sheet. Crazy as it may sound to many, but it wasn’t that long ago that a spreadsheet formula was considered advanced knowledge. Circling back to the Hubspot blog, Santiago details 30 such time-saving shortcuts that can lead to improved productivity.

Similar to understanding shortcuts as we previously discussed, understanding technologies that can make getting from point A to point B faster should be investigated. According to a recent blog on Sprout Social, there are many best practices for using WhatsApp that are not widely known. When most people think of WhatsApp, they think of the messaging service that is widely used throughout the world, but you are not going to get many thoughts of using WhatsApp to be more efficient in your business.

Sprout Social details these 4 benefits of using WhatsApp that ultimately will save the user time and money.

  • Expand your global reach. WhatsApp, the most popular messaging app worldwide, has upward of two billion active users across more than 180 countries. With a potential audience that large, it’s easy to engage with new prospects that may not yet be aware of all your business has to offer.

  • Improve the customer experience. Research from Zendesk found that leading companies offer customer support across twice as many channels as their peers. If you are looking to expand your opportunities to support customers, WhatsApp provides a seamless platform for doing so.

  • Enhance employee satisfaction. WhatsApp’s messaging capability can also be a win for your internal team as customer support personnel report that they are 50% more likely to want to engage with customers via messaging platforms versus more traditional methods because it affords them the freedom to multitask.

  • Increase profitability. When customer service is streamlined, operating expenses often shrink. Gartner predicts that by 2025, 40% of customer service will go from a major organizational expense to a significant profit driver as direct messaging streamlines sales pipelines.” (Coleman, 2022)

The search can be overwhelming when seeking tips and tricks to do just about anything. Knowing tips and tricks is unquestionably a time saver. For anyone looking to not only save time, but also improve their efficiency, reduce activity, and improve their productivity, knowing what platforms to optimize one’s skillsets is critical.

Social Media Examiner takes a close look at LinkedIn’s new navigator features to save one’s time and improve overall prospecting. Specifically, dialing in the insights and notifications will result in saving time and working more efficiently. An excellent point made is the prioritizing of accounts in the Sales Navigator. “Designed to help you stay on top of the accounts that matter most to your business, this feed keeps track of the employee count and headcount growth for all key accounts."

If you don’t select priority accounts, Sales Navigator automatically places the accounts you’ve saved or viewed most recently in this feed. To ensure that a specific account appears in your priority list, click the star icon from the feed or your list of saved accounts” (Sonnenberg, 2022). LinkedIn, like many social media channels, is designed and ever-improving to help your interaction be as smooth and effective as possible. After all, that is how they make their money.

Knowing the difference between productive and active can be as simple as knowing how to use the application features, shortcuts, and tips and tricks that are all designed to help you get where you want to go as fast as possible. Take the time to learn how to be efficient and you will find yourself spending less time accomplishing tasks and becoming as productive as possible.
